Hi guys, today we are discussing the Key Measurements for your Living Room.

Creating a comfortable and functional space depends largely on the scale of your furniture in relation to your room.

The Golden Rule here is; the proportions of the furniture needs to meet the proportions of the room.

Here we will make suggestions and mention common furniture sizes that will assist you with the layout of your Living Room. These key measurements are just a guide, but a must with any layout of your Living Room.

Furniture

Standard Sofas

Sofas come in various styles and custom sizes, made to fit any space. The popular average sofa sizes are:

  • 185cm for a smaller space – snug 2 seats
  • 215cm for an average sized space – relaxed 2 seats
  • 240 – 245cm for a larger space – relaxed 3 seats

Corner Sofas / Sectional Sofas

This is a sofa which comprises of 2 two seat sofas placed perpendicular to each other. Each sofa can either comprise of 2 seats each or 3 seats each. A combination of 2 seats and 3 seats is also permitted.

Remember that this style of sofa takes up a large portion of your space. On average you’ll need a space of about 2.15m x 3m

Shaped Sofas

A Shaped Sofa is another space gobbler. This sofa comprises of 2 sofas connected by a center piece. Depending on the amount of seating needed, an average Shaped sofa could measure about 3.5m upwards and required a space of 1.5m for depth.

Love Seats

Love Seats measure on average 1.5m in length and depending on the style, the depth is around 1m at least. This type of seating is great for a reading nook or a larger entrance hall.

Lounge Chairs

These chairs usually swivel, rock and or lean back and require extra space to recline. Lounge chairs can serve as seating on their own and can also be paired with a sofa. When placing a coffee table or ottoman infront of a Lounge chair remember to position it a comfortable distance away to allow room for a walk through.

Lounge chair sizes vary largely but as a rule of thumb, allow 1.7m from the back of the chair to the front of the ottoman.

Accent Chairs

The upholstered version of these chairs require a space of about 1m in width and 1.2m in depth.

Stools and Benches

Additional seating in the form of stools and benches are great but remember to space them correctly to avoid a cluttered look. Always choose furniture with functionality in mind.

Cube Ottomans / Foot Stools measure on average 51cm square. A good size for the bench is about 50cm in depth x 1.5m in length

Sofa Tables / Consoles

Consoles usually measure up to 50cm deep x 185cm long. Consoles are great sofa backed or against a wall. Depending on the position of the your sofa and chairs, a console can back the sofa to ground it. A display for antique lamps and exotic vases are created. They come in various designs, from wood to glass topped, and steel framed.

End Tables

End Tables are a great alternative to the Console / Sofa Table. These tables are usually square and can measure up to 75cm in either direction. The height will depend on the height of your sofa.

Cocktail / Coffee Tables

Coffee tables are considered focal points of your living area. Depending on the style of your sofas and chairs, you can choose between a square, rectangle, oval and round tables. Whichever option is best for your layout, you can position it as close as 30cm to your sofa, however keep them less than 50cm away from your sofas and chairs.

Floor Lamps

One or two Floor Lamps strategically placed, can illuminate any room evenly. These lamps take up little floor space and can compliment your style. Depending on the style of your base, they usually use about 35cm in diameter for floorspace and 215cm in height.

Artwork

Depending on the size of the artwork, hang artwork low, 145cm from the floor, with the top just above eye level, around 1.5m from the floor.

Large paintings need generous wall space. Hang artwork opposite your doorway, so that everybody entering the room will see it.

Sculptures

A fair amount of space is needed when displaying Sculptures. The base of the sculpture should be in proportion to the sculpture. If you intend to raise your sculpture, ensure that your base is placed on an even surface and the sculpture securely attached.

Living Room Layout Ideas

Rule:

The room needs to flow around the furniture with enough space for a walk through to furniture and doors / windows. Walk space needs to be about 91cm max in clear width. Coffee tables are placed within 50cm from seating, generally within 30cm and place other furniture about 60cm from one another to allow for an easy walk through.

A square coffee table is placed between 2 sofas or 1 sofa and 2 chairs. A rectangular coffee table is best suited for a sofa facing a fireplace or television.
